SPECIAL VISIT BY FAMILY OF FORMER EMMCO ENGINEER TO BUKIT BESI MUSEUM

6 October 2026
SPECIAL VISIT BY FAMILY OF FORMER EMMCO ENGINEER TO BUKIT BESI MUSEUM

Bukit Besi Museum received a special visit from three visitors from Australia, namely Sir David White, Downa White, and Graham White, who are family members of the late Sir Ronald James White, a former mechanical engineer who served with the Eastern Mining and Metal Company (EMMCO) during the British mining era in Bukit Besi around the 1960s. More interestingly, Sir David White and Graham White also lived in Bandar Bukit Besi before moving to Australia following the closure of EMMCO's operations.

This visit was a very meaningful moment as it reconnected the historical legacy of Bukit Besi mining with the family of a former officer who was directly involved in the iron ore mining industry at that time.

The visit was also graced by the presence of Encik Hasri bin Omar, Senior Corporate Manager; Encik Mohd Hafiz bin Ahmad, Tourism Manager; and Tuan Haji Abdul Halim bin Yusof, Administration and Human Resources Manager. During the visit, the White family agreed to donate several personal collections belonging to the late Sir Ronald James White to the Bukit Besi Museum. Among the collections donated was a Pilot's License Book, which serves as historical evidence that Bukit Besi was once a location for pilot commissioning funded by EMMCO for its employees.

In addition, collections of vinyl records, personal photographs from their time in Bukit Besi, and sketches of Bandar Bukit Besi depicting various infrastructures and social amenities at that time, including a cinema, railway station, and other facilities, some of which have been lost to time, were also donated.

The donation of these collections is a very meaningful added value in strengthening the Bukit Besi Museum's collection, as well as documenting the history of the iron ore mining industry's development and the life of the community in Bandar Bukit Besi during the EMMCO era.

Throughout the visit, the delegation also had the opportunity to view exhibits, artifact collections, and historical information related to the iron ore mining operations carried out by EMMCO in Bukit Besi. This visit also served as a platform for sharing information, experiences, and history related to EMMCO, especially regarding the life, role, and contributions of the late Sir Ronald James White as a former engineer of the company in the development of the iron ore mining industry in Bukit Besi.

The presence of the family of the former EMMCO engineer from Australia not only strengthens the historical connection between the families of former EMMCO employees and the Bukit Besi Museum but also adds value to the museum's efforts in documenting, preserving, and enriching the narrative of Bukit Besi's iron ore mining history for future generations' reference and viewing.
